Russian Navy focuses on renewal of Black Sea submarine force

Russian Navy chief Admiral Viktor Chirkov has told the navy’s high command that Russia aims to revive the Black Sea Fleet’s submarine force, with the build and deployment of six Improved Kilo-class boats, according to defence ministry reports.

In early July, Adm Chirkov also told senior submarine and surface warship programme officials, “The progress of the construction of the six diesel-electric Project 636 [Varshavyanka Improved Kilo-class] submarines destined for the Black Sea Fleet is under the constant supervision of the High Command”.
