Project 636.3 second diesel-electric submarine Rostov-on-Don designed for Black Sea Fleet will take northern deepwater trials in the near future. The sub will sail to the Black Sea in the first half of 2015, Russia’s Navy Chief Commander Admiral Viktor Chirkov said on Tuesday.

The St. Andrew naval flag was hoisted on the submarine earlier on Tuesday, from this moment of time it is considered officially taken into naval service. Rostov-on-Don was enrolled in 4th separate brigade of the Black Sea Fleet with a base in southern Russian Krasnodar territorial city of Novorossiisk.

“The submarine will take deepwater trials,” the admiral said, adding that the submarine should make a crossing to the Black Sea in the first half of 2015.

NPO Energomash concluded with American Corporation Orbital Science a contract for delivery of RD-181 engines to be used for the first stage of Antares rocket from 2015.

“We undertook to deliver 60 engines. At the present time we have a firm contract for 20 engines we have already started implementing. Thus we will deliver the first two engines in June 2015. This is the direct contract between Orbital Sciences Corporation and NPO Energomash, – Roscosmos spokesman reported.

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev signed a decree on the negotiations of Russian “Energomash” and the American Orbital Sciences for the supply of RD-181 engines.

RD-181 engine was developed by Energomash especially for Antares.

First serial-production Il-76MD-90A airlifter makes maiden flight

The first serial-production Ilyushin Il-76MD-90A (Il-476) strategic transport aircraft has made its maiden flight, the Aviastar-SP production facility announced on 30 December.

Aircraft 0104 flew for more than two hours at Aviastar-SP’s Ulyanovsk aircraft factory, about 700 km east of Moscow.

Aviastar-SP said the aircraft’s engines, equipment, and general handling were evaluated during the flight.

Following further ‘factory tests’, the aircraft will be delivered to the Russian Air Force (Voyenno-Vozdushnyye Sily – VVS). The VVS is contracted to receive 39 of the upgraded Il-76MD-90A airlifters. It is understood to have a requirement for up to 100 of the upgraded tankers, as well as 38 Il-76MD-90A-derived Il-478 tankers.

Russia’s Arctic group to get Orlan-10 drones by year end

Before the end of the outgoing year the Orlan-10 drones will be delivered to a unit of the Eastern Military District in Chukotka, the district’s press service told TASS on Monday.

“The command staff and operators have completed training at the multiservice drone control center in the Moscow region. Before the end of the current year specialists with several Orlan-10 sets will arrive at the permanent service base – the Anadyr-Ugolny aerodrome,” a district official said.

According to him, the first trial flights of the drones in the low temperature conditions are planned in early 2015.
