“Machine-building plant “ZiO-Podolsk” (which is part of the Engineering division of Rosatom – Atomenergomash) completed unique welding operation of steam pipes to the housing of the reactor facility “RITM-200” for the main nuclear icebreaker “Arktika”.
In carrying out this operation one of the most difficult types of welding – in orbital position at a constant heating of the metal in the zone of the assembly was used.
Welding parts in the orbital position is used in special cases where it is impossible to turn over the product, and difficult access to the seam. Welds were made in several spatial positions at the same time when heating the metal in the zone of the assembly above 200 degrees to avoid the risk of cracks in welded joints. The process lasted continuously for three days.
