Russian naval aviation looks toward new ASW aircraft

Russia will develop a completely new anti-submarine warfare (ASW) aircraft to replace the Il-38 ‘May’ and other ASW aircraft in its inventory, according to naval aviation chief Major General Igor Kozhin.

Maj Gen Kozhin said the aircraft is currently being selected and will be introduced by 2020, although he did not indicate which aircraft might be under consideration when he spoke to Russian media.

Russia currently operates 28 Il-38 maritime patrol aircraft (MPA) alongside 20 long-range Tu-142 ‘Bear F’ ASW aircraft (an MPA variant of the Tu-95).

Russia is currently modernising its Il-38s to a new standard known as the Il-38N, which features the new Novella search and track sensor suite.
