Russia working on new Project 22800 corvette class

Russia is to lay down the first of a new class of corvette by the end of 2015, according to the commander of the Russian Navy (VMS), Admiral Viktor Chirkov.

The VMS plans to acquire at least 18 corvettes from the new Project 22800 class to replace the Admiral Grigorovich-class (Project 11356) frigates, which rely on Ukrainian engines – whose embargo has halted the second batch of the programme. The new class will instead be equipped with Russian engines and will also have improved firepower over the previous class.

“The corvette’s design will have been defined by the end of July,” Adm Chirkov said during the International Maritime Defence Show (IMDS-2015) in St Petersburg.
