France and Russia plan to come to an agreement in late May on terms for severing the contract for supply of Mistral-class helicopter carriers to Russia, a source in the Russian military-technical sphere has said, according to the RIA Novosti news agency.
“Paris has not yet replied to the official inquiry from Moscow,” the source said in a RIA Novosti report published on 23 May. “Nonetheless, talks are continuing, and the sides plan to find a mutually acceptable solution next week.”
The apparent progress on scrapping the contract follows months of stalemate between Paris and Moscow. According to Russian business daily Kommersant , France made initial proposals to Russia earlier this month for payments to Russia in exchange for permission to sell the two ships to a third party.
