Russia to Leave T-90S Tank in Peru for Trials

Russia has decided to leave a prototype T-90S battle tank in Lima, Peru, for trials by the Peruvian military, following its participation there in the SITDEF Peru 2013 arms exhibition last week, Russian state arms corporation Rosoboronexport said on Sunday.

“Rosoboronexport and Uralvagonzavod [its manufacturer] have been officially asked by the Peruvian military to leave the T-90S tank in Peru after the show for tests,” Rosoboronexport’s Sergei Ladygin said.

Those tests may take up to six months, he said.

Equipment will be delivered to Peru to allow the tank to undertake a range of firing trials, he added.

Russia will actively seek new deals on the Latin American arms market, which it expects to reach a value of $50 billion in the next ten years, the head of a Russian Technologies (Rostec) high-tech state corporation delegation said on Saturday.

“According to our expert estimates, the volume of the Latin American arms market will reach about $50 billion in the next ten years. If we focus our efforts on this, corresponding contracts could be signed,” said Sergei Goreslavsky, head of the delegation of Rostec, which comprises state arms exporter Rosoboronexport, at the SITDEF Peru 2013 defense technology exhibition.

Rosoboronexport wants to deliver Su-35 fighters and Pantsir air defense systems to Brazil outside the framework of a tender, RIA Novosti reports. It was stated by the head of the company’s delegation at SITDEF exhibition held in Lima, Sergey Ladigin.

Russian Su-35 fighter was struck off the shortlist of the Brazilian tender in 2009. The remaining participants are Gripen (Sweden), F-16 (USA) and Rafale (France).

“Despite the fact that Russia lost the tender, we have made an offer to the Brazilian party regarding deliveries of Su-35 fighters and Pantsir air defense systems outside the framework of the tender. Our offer is being considered”, — Ladigin said.

Russia and Peru will sign a contract for overhaul of MiG-29 aircraft in May, RIA Novosti reports. It was stated by the Deputy Director of Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation (FSMTC), Konstantin Biryulin, after the closing of SITDEF exhibition held in Lima.

Belarus sold 20 MiG-29 fighters to Peru in 1997. “The contract for overhaul of these MiG-29 fighters should be signed in May”, — Biryulin said.

He also noted that the second meeting of the intergovernmental commission for military-technical cooperation will take place in September – October. The possibility of carrying out training of the Peruvian personnel in Russia will be considered during the meeting. “We are entering a brand-new level of cooperation allowing us to form mutually-beneficial relations in the area of military-technical cooperation”, — Biryulin noted.
